Swab - Barcelona Art Fair

26 - 29 September 2019

Swab - Barcelona Art Fair featuring artists Silvia Binda Heiserova and Olivia Lennon.

In her screenprint series, Silvia interprets the urban landscape as a cluster of geometric and abstract shapes, dominated by various shades of grey and black colour. The compositions and colour palette symbolically point to the urban paradigm of gendered, exclusionary and vertically established hierarchies. Within this closed system of colours and shapes, unexpected colourful elements appear in the uniform environment as a rejection of masculine authority and rigidity. The artworks refer to the historical backgrounds, violent events and demonstrations of power related to patriarchy, which are engraved in the urban space and thus are forming the present, influencing our everyday lives.

In ‘Atlas’, Olivia Lennon presents a collection of watercolour and vinyl paintings depicting distorted elliptical projections of both the earth and the Cosmic Microwave Background. The contiguous presentation of the earth and the CMB encourage the viewer to slip between the history of navigation on earth and the possibility of human endeavour to the edge of the universe. Crucially, Lennon asks whether this forthcoming expansion will entail a repeat of our historical mistakes ; ranging from colonisation, environmental destruction, the introduction of invasive species and the over extraction of resources.
