Afternoon You, 2024

Description

Manny Yip (b. 1994, Hong Kong) is a visual artist whose rural upbringing profoundly influences her practice.

Yip’s work explores themes of childhood, growth, social norms, culture, and imagination, highlighting the intricate interplay between personal introspection and external realities. By integrating painting techniques with ready-made objects, she aims to capture nuanced emotions of familiarity and alienation, inviting viewers to reinterpret the significance of forgoten moments and everyday objects.

During her residency in Japan, Yip reflected on the vast fields outside, which evoked memories of flowers she had planted in her studio. This contrast between the intimacy of her past and the openness of nature continues to inform her artistic practice. In recent years, she has explored calligraphic techniques applied to Western paintings, utilizing a horizontal canvas orientation.
This innovative approach has expanded the boundaries of her artistic exploration.

In 2017, Yip earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from RMIT University, Melbourne. In 2023, she furthered her academic journey with a Master of Arts in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University, where she was honored with a Scholastic Award under the Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme.
