Kovanlık is a handwoven textile developed during a five month residency in a mountain village in the Taurus region. The work combines three techniques that do not traditionally coexist: double knot carpet weaving, kilim based horizontal weaving, and cicim, a supplementary patterning method embedded between layers.
The composition emerged through process rather than a fixed plan, shaped by the landscape, local knowledge, and motifs learned from one of the last practicing weavers in the area. References to Karain and Kocain caves situate the work within deep historical time, while a woven pathway echoes ancient routes connecting inland settlements to the Mediterranean.
Embedded with over twenty conductive touchpoints, the textile functions as an interactive narrative system. Hidden areas trigger video works recorded in these caves, while others activate text fragments combining personal encounters, regional myths, and the political atmosphere surrounding the 2024 Turkish elections.
