BBA Gallery is pleased to present acclaimed Danish photographer Jens Juul’s solo exhibition ‘Six Degrees of Copenhagen’ as part of the 10th edition of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) in Berlin. This photographic series encapsulates a project spanning 10 years in which Juul utilises his signature black and white photography style to explore the lives of various eclectic Copenhageners in intimate detail.
Based on the six degrees of separation theory, which states that no two people are more than six social connections apart, Jens Juul creates a vulnerable portraiture series with the people that he meets in his everyday life as the subjects. He begins the process by approaching a stranger in Copenhagen and asking to take their picture. In the privacy of their own environment, the subject and photographer build a relationship and develop a story that is mediated by the photographer’s lens and captured in a single image. The subject then refers to someone that they know for Juul to continue the series with. Once six linked protagonists have been photographed in this way, the process then begins again.
‘Six Degrees of Copenhagen’ is a deeply moving and thought-provoking exhibition that explores the unique vulnerability of us as individuals but also the inevitable connectedness of the human experience that unites us all.
