Untitled, a telling exhibition of new and recent works by the multidisciplinary artist and gallery Director / Creative Director, Vishal Shah.
A deliberate and defiant refusal of a singular title, Untitled is an invitation to engage with the artist’s central concerns: transcendence, personal mythologies, and the age-old human condition to enquire about the afterlife.
Shah, trained in Fine Art and Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, and works the medium of print in this exhibition and its inherent repetition to navigate the distance between our short-lived moment on this earth and the vastness of eternity. The exhibition is anchored by a series of meticulous hand-made silkscreen prints from the series 'Between Here and Elsewhere' — including works such as 'Oops! A typo.', 'Mantra', 'Next Time', and 'Enough Said'. These prints employ the printed word, often drawing from commercial and advertising forms, to directly confront the speed and pace of modern communication. Through this juxtaposition, Shah highlights the sheer power of authorship in language — how the declarative certainty of a slogan is used to control, contrast, or co-opt the slower, reflective pace required for contemplating eternity.
Central to the show is 'Legends', Set 1 of 3, the introduction to a three-part project that explores cycles of life, termination, and transformation. A snake must shed its skin in order to live its next stage, or the life suspension within a chrysalis before a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly; the work focuses on these moments of necessary ending. This thought-provocative installation in memorial form features multiple stacks of offset lithographs where people's names are configured in an alphabetized riddle, mirroring the baffling structure of life itself. This riddle speaks directly to the reality of undesirability — how, for countless reasons rooted in politics, religion, marketing, or gender, something in an individual must be interrupted or terminated for a new life, a new identity, or a new legend to be born.
Untitled is a profound and rigorous exhibition that solidifies Shah's commitment to visual storytelling and his continuous inquiry into how we seek permanence within the ephemeral.
